About the Children’s Healthcare Center
Our Children’s Healthcare Center provides care for medically fragile and/or technology-dependent children, ages newborn through 21 years. Most children are admitted from a hospital NICU or PICU. This program focuses on patients who no longer require acute care, but who need significant medical attention related to wound therapy, PICC antibiotics, post-surgical care, NG, GJ tube feedings, and ventilator care. The Center is a “home away from home” for medically fragile children and their families.
About the Nurse Manager (RN) Position
The Nurse Manager (RN) will supervise staff, visitors, students, and others on at the CHC. This position requires advanced knowledge in the field of nursing. The Nurse Manager possesses good judgement and decision making qualities concerning care of medically complex children, safety, and management of visitors and overall supervision of the CHC unit. The position requires management of the CHC under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner and Medical Director for the CHC.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Follows Maryville’s and CHC Standard Operating procedures. Reviews and assists in updating CHC Standard Operating procedures, when necessary
Assists in organizing, ordering and obtaining client medical supplies
Monitors program to ensure that clients receive appropriate health care as ordered and prescribed
Promotes and monitors client safety
Participates in selection process for new employees when requested and makes recommendations for hire
Assists and coordinates client admissions and discharges
Assists and participates in organizing and presenting trainings and competencies for CHC staff
Assists in orienting new staff when needed
Communicates and assists with coordination of families during visits or teaching on the unit
Provides patient care when needed
Assists in any unit activities including, but not limited to, education, evaluation, plans of care, etc.
Assists with or coordinate staff meetings on evening and night shift, as needed
Assists RN’s/CNA’s on shift as needed
Promotes communication amongst shifts
Promotes and assists with unit improvements and implementing new endeavors
Assists with monitoring, tracking and giving TB tests, flu or other vaccines
Assists in monitoring charting, documentation, medication administration and recording
Coordinates, and possibly accompanies, transfer of a sick client to the closest ED, referring home hospital, or to home hospital ED
Knowledgeable and able to teach emergency procedures for the CHC
Communicates unit activities, equipment needs, staff meetings, educational needs
Communicates and assists Nurse Educators, Child Life specialist, Medical Case Manager & Unit Coordinator
Facilitates computer changes and improvements
Assists in medication administration documentation, and implementation of new systems
Maintains the appearance of nursing areas for sanitation, order and safety
Makes rounds to assure personnel are performing appropriate care to meet client needs. Reports problems to DON
Participates in continued performance quality improvement
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience:
Graduate Degree in related field(s) highly preferred, or minimum 7 years experience in a Nurse Manager or similar position.
BSN / Certified Registered Nurse
Currently licensed RN in the State of Illinois
CPR certified
PALS certified (or must achieve within 6 months)
Experience in pediatric, emergency care, PICU, NICU or extensive hospital nursing required
Supervisor experience preferred
Skills /Knowledge:
Skilled in supervising, scheduling, redirecting, and changing daily staffing
Knowledgeable of nursing best practices
Physical Demands:
Required to frequently sit, stand, bend, stoop and walk, sometimes for extended periods.
Required to lift/ move objects weighing in excess of 40 pounds.
Must have visual, hearing, and learning capabilities sufficient to perform the essential functions defined above.
Environment and Scheduling:
Work is performed in designated administrative office settings.
Duties may involve contact with youth who may be threatening, aggressive and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Must be flexible and available to work additional hours when necessary.
May be scheduled to work on weekends and/or holidays
Position requires on-call responsibilities one out of every three weeks, approximately, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 am
