Special Education Teacher

Department: Walsh Academy
Location: Niles, IL

**Job Summary:**
As a Special Education Teacher at Walsh Academy, you will lead classroom instruction in a Special Education environment, supervising and coordinating the classroom, and developing and implementing the school curriculum to ensure every student's academic and vocational success.

**Responsibilities:**
- Establish collaborative relationships with colleagues, consultants, therapists, and administrators.
- Maintain required educational certifications and training.
- Stay informed about current developments and instructional best practices.
- Attend team meetings and contribute to proactive discussions.
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians and external stakeholders.
- Follow behavior programs and document student progress promptly.
- Develop new courses of instruction and IEPs to meet students' changing needs.
- Adhere to policies regarding student abuse reporting and confidentiality.
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.
- Participate in performance quality improvement initiatives.

**Qualifications:**
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education from an accredited institution.
- Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Learning Behavioral Specialist certificate (LBSI).
- Experience in teaching special education and crisis intervention preferred.

**Skills and Knowledge:**
- Valid Illinois driver's license required.
- Ability to assess student skills and design Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).
- Knowledge of special education best practices and policies.
- Excellent communication skills with various stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google G-Suite, and educational software.
- Ability to organize workloads, handle crisis intervention, and prioritize tasks effectively.

**Physical Demands:**
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, walk, and lift/move objects as needed.
- Capable of providing physical restraint for students' safety.
- Visual, hearing, and learning capabilities to perform job functions.
- Comfortable working on a computer for extended periods.

**Environment and Scheduling:**
- Work during school and vocational program hours.
- Ability to work off-site during remote learning days.
- Work in various educational and administrative settings.
- Duties may involve contact with students in challenging situations.
