Transitional Counselor- Des Plaines, IL

Department: St. Dominic Savio Program Staff
Location: Des Plaines, IL

**Job Summary:**
Maryville Academy is seeking Transitional Counselors to work in the St. Dominic Savio Program in Des Plaines, Illinois. The Transitional Counselors will provide direct care to youth with emotional and behavioral issues on evening and overnight shifts. The primary goal of the position is to support youth in transitioning to less restrictive settings and empower them to become active members of the community.

**Responsibilities:**
- Implement Maryville's policies and procedures along with program-specific operating procedures.
- Engage with youth using trauma-informed care principles.
- Assist youth in developing life skills, independent living skills, and vocational readiness.
- Guide and support youth in the treatment process and complete necessary documentation.
- Monitor youth's medication administration.
- Plan and lead structured recreational and social activities.
- Intervene in crises using Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques.
- Attend and actively participate in staff and treatment team meetings.
- Utilize Maryville treatment paradigms and resources to achieve positive outcomes.
- Safely drive a passenger van to transport youth.
- Complete all required agency training.

**Qualifications:**
- Bachelor's degree in a human services field preferred (e.g., psychology, counseling, social work) or a High School Diploma with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
- Successful completion of staff education requirements including training in NCI, CPR, and Maryville Model of Care.
- Ability to set and maintain appropriate boundaries, ensure safety, manage groups effectively, and de-escalate potentially volatile situations.
- Proficiency in facilitating psychoeducational and life skills training groups.
- Strong computer skills for documentation purposes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

**Physical Requirements:**
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and drive for extended periods.
- Capability to lift/move objects or youth weighing over 40 pounds.
- Proficiency in providing physical restraint to youth, if necessary.

**Environment and Schedule:**
- May involve interaction with potentially volatile youth.
- Flexibility in scheduling and willingness to work evening and weekend shifts.
