Part Time Cook

Location: Chicago, IL

Maryville has an opening for a part-time Cook position to serve the Center For Children in Chicago. Hours are Wednesday 2pm-6pm, Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 2pm-6pm for one part-time cook.

About the Children's Healthcare Center

Maryville’s Children’s Healthcare Center is a long-term care facility that provides specialized clinical care for medically fragile children, also known as medically complex, as well as children who have suffered an accident or illness and now require transition care, ages newborn through 21. The Center provides care to patients who may be technology-dependent (e.g., ventilator care, apnea monitoring) and training for parents, caregivers, and siblings to help them become more confident when attending to the fragile child’s specialized needs.

About the Crisis Nursery

The Maryville Crisis Nursery provides free short-term care for children of families who are experiencing a severe disruptive crisis or a family emergency or to prevent that crisis from happening. Children ages newborn through six years receive round-the-clock childcare, up to 72 hours a stay. This safe and nurturing environment is designed to protect them from harmful experiences and the damaging effects of trauma. Issues that bring families to the Maryville Crisis Nursery include unemployment, parental illness or hospitalization, poverty and homelessness.

About the Cook Position: At Maryville, the Cook is responsible for the preparation for all food items required for our clients, staff, and visitors, and to do so in accordance with governmental guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows all Maryville’s policies and procedures as well as all standard operating procedures for designated work sites/programs;
  • Responsible for the preparation and serving of all food on schedule, according to the menu;
  • Utilizes standardized recipes, portion control and ingredient controls;
  • Maintains food costs through the use of "fifo", food rotation, safe food handling, recording of food production amounts, and utilizing carryovers;
  • Assists in planning nutritious, balanced and appetizing meals in accordance with governmental guidelines;
  • Assists with food ordering and inventory;
  • Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience:

  • Culinary degree or related discipline preferred, but relevant experience and technical abilities may be substituted;
  • Must possess Sanitation Certificate.

Skills /Knowledge:

  • Ability to provide food service and work under pressure during busy production periods; 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands:
  •  Required to frequently sit, stand, bend, stoop and walk, sometimes for extended periods;
  • Required to lift/ move objects weighing in excess of 40 pounds;
  • Must have visual, hearing, and learning capabilities sufficient to perform the essential functions defined above.
Environment and Scheduling:
  • Work is performed in the designated kitchen area;
  • Duties may involve contact with youth or adults who may be threatening, aggressive and/or under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
  • Must be flexible and available to work additional hours when necessary.
